Making visits matter with Homecare training

Posted by:

In 2017, Unison carried out a survey of 1000 homecare workers, revealing several major discrepancies between regulations set by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence and actual homecare training and practice in the industry.

The subsequent report, ‘Making Visits Matter’ revealed that as many as 65% of service users are routinely receiving personal care visits of less than 15 minutes. This results in rushed, substandard care that can actually compromise the dignity and independence of service users.

So why is it happening?

  1. Poor homecare training

Staff that have received inadequate or shortened homecare training are unable to complete tasks in the most efficient way possible.

  1. Funding

A £2.6bn funding shortfall debilitates the homecare industry, equating to an 11% drop in spend per adult.

It is doubtful that a miraculous boost in funding will suddenly appear, so how exactly are agencies supposed to make homecare visits effective? The answer is by focussing on achieving outstanding care quality via homecare training.

Traditional learning doesn’t get results

We believe that current homecare training efforts are simply missing the mark. Why?

Paperwork, paperwork, paperwork – Are you still using paper records? What would happen if they got lost or damaged? What about natural human error when completing records?

Lost in your laptop – Do you spend hours of precious time trawling through lengthy spreadsheets? Do you get lost in your endless files or folders?

Broadcast training– It’s all well and good providing the best homecare training materials, but do you get regular feedback from your homecare workers and their mentors?

The good news is that there is a way forward.

Step into the future with On.Board

On.Board is a brand new training platform, designed to help agencies go above and beyond when it comes to the quality of homecare they provide. It is for those agencies who believe a CQC rating of ‘Good’ is simply not good enough, and that ‘Outstanding’ is the only way forward.
