Could mlearning really work for me? Here is a checklist.

My last blog was about sharing and exploring the opportunities which mobile learning is providing for large or small companies alike. With a plethora of applications on the market, we wanted to help our readers explore which features would be most important to them.  

We asked our customers to share what they considered to be the most important questions to ask themselves before introducing any mobile learning solution. With their responses we put together a non-technical checklist which you can use to help evaluate current approaches or consider when looking at new solutions.

What are the key areas you need to consider?

We received a number of responses which touched upon four main areas:

Learning program

When considering a new mlearning platform have you considered whether you would want to use existing content or build new content? There are many platforms out there where you can link to existing content, but have it placed in an easy to use learning curriculum.

If you do need additional content, would you want this managed in house or by an outsourced supplier. With the range of DIY platforms on the market it is now possible to create new content without instructional design experience. Also consider your current market – is it moving quickly? Would you need to update content every few months? If you were to consider an outsourced organization to build content, would it be possible to amend and edit as the market changes?

Learning content

How engaging is your current learning content, is it easily accessible? Consider where your current learning content sits and how engaging it is for your learners. Are they motivated to learn? What could you do to improve? We have worked with some clients to include existing pdfs, MS office docs and videos in a learning program, but add engaging activities around them such as interactive elearning modules, forms, web casts and quizzes.

Learning reinforcement

Most learning platforms focus only on content and what learners need to know to do their job well. However, what they don’t do is encourage and check whether learners can apply their learning back in the workplace. Consider how important is it that learners pick up what they learnt quickly? Many organizations encourage coaching and feedback to help their employees apply learning, but the reality often is managers don’t have the time to do this or aren’t always around to see the quality of work being completed. Consider whether it would be beneficial to have a product that connects learners to managers, mentors or subject matters for support and feedback.

Learning system

One of the biggest technical advances has been the cloud, allowing platforms to be easily accessible on any device at any time. How important would this be for your organization? Do you have remote employees or ones who work outside the office from time to time? How convenient would it be for your learners to complete a learning curriculum when it suits them? This flexibility of completing learning anytime, anywhere has definitely changed the way employees interact with learning. Reviewing client data of learner platform usage, we found that learners on average used the desktop 41% of the time, mobile 35% and tablets 24% of the time to complete activities.
